The label gets applied to a lot of bands who would have rejected it at the time. Including, possibly, the band most synonymous with it.

Ask anyone to name a goth band and Bauhaus comes up first. Ask a Bauhaus obsessive if that label fits and watch them spend forty minutes explaining why it does not.
